Using Your Castings As a Soil Amendment

Hi guys,

I recently noticed a comment in a post on Facebook originally started about the benefits of worm tea, where an enlightening ‘aha’ moment was had by someone realising that worm castings is the true ‘black gold’.

And they would be absolutely correct! 😊👍

I thought I’d make mention of this because, if you don’t have the absolute need to make an extract or tea (and there’s nothing wrong with doing that either if done correctly), then using your castings as a soil amendment is usually the best way to go and a little can go a long way.

Using castings directly in your soil also means you don’t have to worry about recommended withholding periods before you can safely harvest edible produce because even with a high quality worm tea, the withholding period is still around 120 days.

(Remember an extract / worm tea is still a form of watered down manure).

However, it’s also important to note that not all castings are created equal and there are many factors which can influence the quality of the final product.

Location, climate, soil type, feed stock, castings storage etc. can be just a few contributing factors. As always, there’s a bit of science, testing, experimenting etc to get it right and it’s always an ongoing learning process. 😉

With that said… vermicompost produced in a home worm farm which is used to feed and support a backyard garden / vege patch is usually fine and a great way to make good use of your organic waste as well as the added bonus of helping to divert it from landfill. 😊👍
