The Benefits of Worm Castings vs Synthetic Fertilisers
Something I’ve noticed for a while now is that some people like to compare worm castings to synthetic fertilisers via NKP ratio’s.
But it’s important to note that by doing this… you’re actually asking yourself the wrong question, because the real benefits of vermicompost / worm castings is not about the NKP value.
In fact, they’re often found to be quite low when compared to a synthetic fertiliser.
The benefits of vermicompost / worm castings is actually found in the naturally occurring microbiology such as humic / fulvic acids, beneficial plant hormones etc. and not forgetting excellent moisture retention properties making it the ultimate biological amendment and soil health medicine.
Salts in petroleum based fertilisers also destroy this valuable biology forcing to supplement more and more, which of course is counter productive within the natural cycles of the soil food web.
The fact is, worm cast and good compost can replace what synthetic fertilisers can’t, which is the living components within the soil biology itself.
This is what makes it so special and if you take care of your soil, it will take care of you. 👍
